The denomination of origin La Mancha encompasses one of the oldest and most traditional wine regions in Spain. The cultivation of wine is part of the people from this area since former times, and a lot of feasts, traditions, customs and literature have to do with it.
We shouldn?t forget the references made to the Spanish wines by authors from the Spanish Golden Century. Miguel de Cervantes in D. Quixote makes references to wine like the following one: “ he praised wine so much that it almost reached the sky, although he didn?t dare to leave it there for too long in case it would water”.
The documents existing about wines of La Mancha are from the XII and XIII centuries, after the repopulation of these lands in the Reconquest, there is nobody not to say that the vineyards from La Mancha aren?t from the times of the Roman domination. Nevertheless the cultivation of wine in La Mancha expanded tremendously after 1940, due to the creation of a lot of
Wine Cooperatives all over the region, the main economical activity for the towns conforming the D.O. La Mancha.
